چکیده

Tardi-what? Tardigrades, also known as water bears, are a littlestudied phylum of animals. First discovered 230 years ago, there are at least 700 different species living on land, in fresh water and in the sea. The tardigrades represent a successful group of animals — in flourishing existence after about 600 million years of evolution — that could hold keys to the patterns and mechanisms by which animal body plans evolve.

Emerging field of tardigrades and their stress tolerance

A couple of years ago, Japanese scientists thawed a frozen moss sample from Antarctica collected 30 years earlier. They observed two minute creatures crawling back to life from three decades of ‘cryo-sleep’ inside the moss sample. These tiny time-travellers were tardigrades, also known as water bears. They have four pairs of legs and their body size is about 0.3–1 mm (Figure 1). There are more ...

Detection of a troponin I-like protein in non-striated muscle of the tardigrades (water bears).

Tardigrades, also known as water bears, have somatic muscle fibers that are responsible for movement of their body and legs. These muscle fibers contain thin and thick filaments in a non-striated pattern. However, the regulatory mechanism of muscle contraction in tardigrades is unknown. In the absence of extensive molecular and genomic information, we detected a protein of 31 kDa in whole lysat...

Tolerance to Gamma Radiation in the Tardigrade Hypsibius dujardini from Embryo to Adult Correlate Inversely with Cellular Proliferation

Tardigrades are highly tolerant to desiccation and ionizing radiation but the mechanisms of this tolerance are not well understood. In this paper, we report studies on dose responses of adults and eggs of the tardigrade Hypsibius dujardini exposed to gamma radiation. In adults the LD50/48h for survival was estimated at ~ 4200 Gy, and doses higher than 100 Gy reduced both fertility and hatchabil...

Freeze tolerance, supercooling points and ice formation: comparative studies on the subzero temperature survival of limno-terrestrial tardigrades.

Many limno-terrestrial tardigrades live in unstable habitats where they experience extreme environmental conditions such as drought, heat and subzero temperatures. Although their stress tolerance is often related only to the anhydrobiotic state, tardigrades can also be exposed to great daily temperature fluctuations without dehydration. Survival of subzero temperatures in an active state requir...

Biology and biodiversity of tardigrades in the world and in Sweden Current status and future visions

Tardigrades are small water-dwelling invertebrates that can live almost anywhere in the world. Even though they are well-known our knowledge about them is still scarce. The aim of this study was therefore to explore our current knowledge about tardigrades by: (1) explore their global phylogeny and biogeography based on bioinformatics (2) screen for tardigrades in select locations of northern Sw...
